春節是中國民間最隆重最富有特色的傳統節日，也是最熱鬧的一個古老節日。一般指除夕和正月初一，是一年的第一天,又叫陰歷年，俗稱「過年」。但在民間，傳統意義上的春節是指從臘月初八的臘祭或臘月二十三或二十四的祭灶，一直到正月十五，其中以除夕和正月初一為高潮。在春節期間，中國的漢族和很多少數民族都要舉行各種活動以示慶祝。這些活動均以祭祀神佛、祭奠祖先、除舊布新、迎禧接福、祈求豐年為主要內容。活動豐富多彩，帶有濃郁的民族特色。在天津過春節還有掛中國結的。

春節起源
關於春節的起源有多種說法，其中幾種較具代表性的說法，如春節源於臘祭，春節源於巫術儀式說，春節源於鬼節說等，但其中被普遍接受的說法是春節由虞舜時期興起。

公元前2000多年的一天，舜即天子位，帶領著部下人員，祭拜天地。從此，人們就把這一天當作歲首。據說這就是農歷新年的由來，後來叫春節。

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.

Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Many customs accompany the Spring Festival. Some are still followed today, but others have weakened.

On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, millet, seeds of Job's tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko.

The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called Preliminary Eve. At this time, people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god. Now however, most families make delicious food to enjoy themselves.

After the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the coming New Year. This is called "Seeing the New Year in".

Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include edible oil, rice, flour, chicken, ck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. What's more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing

春節到了，意味著春天將要來臨，萬象復甦草木更新，新一輪播種和收獲季節又要開始。人們剛剛度過冰天雪地草木凋零的漫漫寒冬，早就盼望著春暖花開，生機勃勃的日子，當新春到來之際，自然要充滿喜悅，載歌載舞地迎接這個節日。
